January Book Club Questions

0

If you are like us, you are finally getting back into what is normal life after the holidays. Between the holiday parties, school events, days off, and the massive amounts of food consumed during those few weeks … it is no surprise that things might have slipped between the cracks — like us virtually meeting for our book club at the end of December. So instead, today we offer you book club questions, and we will post our discussion on January 27th.

We chose Murder on the Orient Express by Agatha Christie for this month. Who does not enjoy a good mystery? We also liked the idea of reading a book that is set in a winter environment, as most of us are enduring the bitter cold in our real lives. Finally, the newest film adaptation of this novel was recently released. Rule number one of book lovers: the book and the movie are never quite the same, so we should experience both!

While you are enjoying this classic whodunit, hopefully with a cozy blanket while watching the snow fall, think of these questions for our meeting discussion:

  1. Who did you think the murder was when you were reading the book? Were you able to solve the mystery before Poirot did?
  2. What is the difference between revenge and justice?
  3. There was some symbolism with the train and the weather during the journey. What role do you feel these played? Did you notice any other symbols?
  4. This is a murder-mystery, but it was published in 1934. Given the prevalence of thrillers and detective stories in TV and film today, would you still classify the novel in this way? Is it still thrilling?
  5. If you could change the setting of the novel to modern times, what or where would you set it?

Check back later this month for our review of Murder on the Orient Express and to read our own thoughts of this book. And for February, we are reading The Con Man’s Daughter by Candice Curry, who is a contributor at sister site, Alamo City Moms Blog!
